Group Update - November 2016

posted 1 Nov 2016, 05:44 by Stephen Harrison
Hello Everyone,

I thought I'd drop you a quick email to give you some updates on what's going on around the group and to make sure you have the info for our group Bonfire Night Celebrations on 10th November.

Beavers Reach for the Stars
Our beaver colony continues to be very busy, welcoming 6 new recruits to the colony after the summer to enjoy a healthy, active programme with a highlight of tackling the Sunderland Climbing Wall. Beavers reached for the top and challenged themselves to go that little bit further on an evening, which for some, was pretty scary! Beavers new programme launches soon and will be available to download from our website
here.

We'd like to say a really warm welcome to all of the parents who have joined our parents rota and we're grateful for your support, bringing in some extra adults will allow us to do more with our beaver colony each week.

Crazy Cubs
The energy of our cub pack never ceases to amaze and our cubs have just returned from a busy weekend camping at Moor House Adventure Centre where their activities included roller skating, cooking pizzas on a campfire, making some natural art and laser tag. Who would have thought you could do all of that in just one weekend!

Cubs have just launched their new Christmas programme which takes them up to the end of the year, within the programme, cubs will be supporting Operation Christmas Child and spreading some cheer across the globe. There will also be plenty of crafts, food and mess. You can download the programme from our downloads page.

Spooky Scouts
Scouts are about to set out on their 'What Goes Bump In the Night' Programme which promises lots of mystery as well as including the teamwork challenge badge along the way. This will be followed by a couple of nights of Christmas cheer including a night on the Centre for Life Ice Rink.

We're pleased to welcome John to the leader team and he's building up his involvement and will hopefully take over as scout leader in the not too distance future. Our new scout programme will launch this week and will be available online.

Bonfire Night Celebrations - 10th November

4th Washington are joining with 1st Herrington Scouts for a Group Bonfire Night Celebration starting at 6:30pm at Moor House Adventure Centre. (Rainton Gate, Houghton le Spring DH4 6QY)

It's a fun filled event for the whole family, with a traditional scout campfire and songs, fireworks and hot chocolate, and a great friendly atmosphere among friends. We'll send you some more info about arrangements nearer the time.

Remembrance Day
The group will be joining the community of Washington for the annual Remembrance Day Celebration in Washington Village. There is usually a large scout presence with 1st Washington and 3rd Washington also in attendance and it's a great chance for us to join the local community at an important local event.

Meet: Outside the Blackbull Pub, Washington Village, 10:00am.
Finish: Approx 11:30am.
Wear: Full uniform and a poppy.
Parents and carers are welcome to come along too.

i.Scout Clothing
Just in time for Christmas, we've launched our branded clothing line, you can purchase clothing from today until the 22nd November and we'll arrange for you to receive it ahead of Christmas.

i.Scout clothing doesn't replace uniform and isn't compulsary, but many young people like to wear i.Scout gear at camps and events where they are not required to wear uniform. Visit our clothing information page for more details and to order.

Join Our Growing Team of Volunteers

We want to offer even more adventures for the members of our group and we're looking for your help! Could you join our beaver and cub section parents rotas, we're looking for parents to help a maximum of 1 in 4 weeks. You don't need any experience because we'll help you find your feet. If you could lend a hand, then please talk to Victoria or Sarah, or email gsl@4thwashingtonscouts.org.uk.

If our parents rotas aren't for you, then we're also looking for additional members of our group executive, the group of people who work behind the scenes to keep the group running smoothly. The group executive usually meets 6 times a year, although you can do more by supporting some of our fundraising events.

If could support, please contact Stephen Harrison (Acting Group Scout Leader) by email gsl@4thwashingtonscouts.org.uk or by phone on 07745 184 137. You can find out more about volunteering in general at www.hls-scouts.org.uk/volunteer.

Best wishes,

Stephen
